1 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

The low rates and barriers of access to COVID-19 vaccination in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community is a clear example of the significant health disparities which continue to occur in Australia.

The social determinants of health that have a direct impact to health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are a result of colonisation and associated policies.

Dr Michelle Kennedy, a proud Wiradjuri woman and PHAA Vice-President (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander), explains ways to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The gaps in Indigenous wellbeing are a national disgrace, and encompass life expectancy, justice, education, and health.

All these gaps must be closed.

There should be a national agenda founded in empowered Indigenous communities and services.

PHAA fully supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and all three of its
recommendations, including the establishment of a constitutionally enshrined Voice to parliament, Truth (Makarrata), and Treaty.
